How to choose God’s way- Lenten Reflections 2025 Day 2

Choosing God’s way may not always be easy, but it’s always the path that truly fulfils.

Life is full of choices. And sometimes, it feels like there’s an easy way and a hard way.

The easy way promises comfort, success and instant rewards, but the hard way, though challenging, leads to something much deeper- true peace, purpose and lasting joy.

We see this choice vividly in the life of Jesus, especially during His time in the wilderness.

St Luke 4:1-2- “Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.”

Jesus’ temptation- a choice between easy and hard

It must’ve been incredibly tough for Jesus. Even though He was the Son of God He was also fully human and during His time in the wilderness, He faced intense temptation. After forty days of fasting, He was hungry, tired and vulnerable. That’s when the devil showed up with tempting offers that promised an easier life.

Imagine being in Jesus’ shoes- He could’ve turned stones into bread to satisfy His hunger. He could’ve saved Himself from danger by calling angels to protect Him. And He could’ve had all the kingdoms of the world with a single act of idolatry. No cross, no suffering- just power and comfort. It must’ve been incredibly tempting.

But Jesus didn’t take the easy way out. He knew those shortcuts led to nowhere. Instead, He chose the harder road, the one that led to sacrifice, suffering and the cross. Jesus wasn’t looking for a quick fix. He was focused on God’s greater plan and the salvation of humanity.

The temptations we face

Just like Jesus, we face our own temptations. The world constantly offers us shortcuts: the chance to take control, to chase success at any cost, and to live for ourselves. It’s easy to get caught up in wanting everything now, without the struggle. Whether it’s skipping hard work for quick rewards, ignoring our values for popularity, or relying on our own strength instead of trusting God, these paths always look easier—but they don’t lead to true fulfilment.

How to choose God’s way

Jesus shows us that the key to choosing the right path lies in staying connected to God. Through prayer, reading the Bible, observing the Holy Sacraments and leaning on the Holy Spirit, we can choose God’s way over the world’s. Even when the world offers us shortcuts, we can trust that God’s plan is always better. His way may not always be the easiest, but it’s the one that leads to lasting joy, peace and a life full of purpose.

So, the next time you face a decision, remember Jesus’ example. It’s okay to choose the harder path, knowing that God will be with you every step of the way. When you choose His way, you’re choosing a life that lasts- a life filled with meaning and hope.
