The Bahrain National Museum was the first touristy place I visited, when I landed in Bahrain and despite making several visits over the years, I can’t believe I haven’t written about it.
There are two types of people in this world: those who find museums and old monuments rather dull, and those who are enthralled by the historical and geographical dimensions of the places they explore. I count myself fortunate to belong to the latter group.
Even today, museums continue to captivate me, offering a glimpse into the past and fueling my imagination. They provide a fascinating window into how life might have evolved in a place long ago.
So here I am with a blog about one of the most beautiful museums I have been to (and have been visiting over the years)! If you’re interested in learning about Bahrain’s rich cultural heritage, then read on and visit this place in person when you come to Bahrain.
Things to know before you get there

Located in the capital city of Manama, the Bahrain National Museum was established in 1988, and is divided into several sections, each dedicated to a different aspect of Bahrain’s history and culture. The museum’s exhibits include over 6000 artifacts dating back to the Dilmun era (4th millennium BC), as well as more recent displays showcasing Bahrain’s modern-day achievements.
As we walked up to its entrance, the museum’s architectural beauty immediately captured our attention. Adorned with intricate sculptures in its courtyard, it seemed to echo the stories of old Bahrain. Positioned along the waterfront, the museum’s serene presence was as calming as the gentle sea breeze that greeted us upon arrival.
Stepping inside, we were greeted by a captivating sight – a sprawling digital map of Bahrain, intricately displayed across the floor. This immersive display not only showcased the island’s geography but also hinted at the museum’s dedication to creativity and innovation in its exhibits.
Exploring the Bahrain National Museum Exhibits
Ever wondered about the daily life of ancient Dilmun? Or what inspired Bahraini artists across centuries? This place has answers in abundance, offering a mosaic of Bahraini culture that’s as colourful as it is captivating.
Dilmun
In this section, we explored the legacy of Dilmun, an ancient civilization that flourished in Bahrain over 4,000 years ago. We gained an idea about their maritime prowess and their role in ancient trade routes that connected civilizations across the region.
Customs and Traditions
One of the most fascinating exhibits at the museum was the Customs and Traditions Hall, where we delved into the daily life of Bahrainis over the centuries. There were displays featuring traditional handicrafts such as weaving and pottery, replicas of traditional homes and marketplaces, traditional customs during marriage and other big events, traditional medicines, and much more.
Hall of Graves
Another section of the museum showcased the ancient burial mounds that date back to the Dilmun era and were used as burial sites for the people of that time. The Hall of Graves features a replica of an actual burial mound, complete with a reconstruction of the burial chamber and the grave goods that were found within.
Art and Calligraphy
We also explored the Art and Calligraphy section, which showcased the rich artistic heritage of Bahrain, including traditional calligraphy and Islamic art. There were displays of various forms of calligraphy used throughout Bahrain’s history, and a description of the techniques and materials used by artists of the time.
Treasures of Bahrain
One of the most popular exhibits at the museum is the Treasures of Bahrain hall, which featured a collection of artifacts from Bahrain’s past, including jewelry, pottery, and coins. This highlights the wealth and sophistication of Bahrain’s ancient civilizations, and also showcases the intricate craftsmanship of the objects on display.
Tylos
We also discovered the legacy of Tylos, another ancient civilization that left its mark on Bahrain. From their strategic location to their vibrant trade networks, Tylos played a crucial role in shaping the history of the region.
Documents and Manuscripts
We then got a glimpse of Bahrain’s written history – its documents and manuscripts. From ancient scrolls to medieval manuscripts, these invaluable artifacts offered a fascinating insight into Bahrain’s past and its role in shaping the broader historical narrative.
Traditional Trades and Crafts
Next, we explored the artistry and craftsmanship of Bahrain’s traditional trades and crafts in this captivating exhibit. From intricate pottery to exquisite jewelry, these age-old techniques have been passed down through generations, preserving Bahrain’s artistic heritage for future generations to admire.
After we finished exploring all the exhibits, we were delighted to discover that the museum offers amenities like a souq/gift shop to purchase your souvenirs and a café that serves traditional Bahraini dishes.
There are several boat tours from the museum as well that take you to Bu Mahar Fort and Arad Fort. (Stay tuned for our experience on one of these tours)
The Bahrain National Museum stands as a source of immense pride for all residents of Bahrain. Not only does it showcase captivating stories of culture and history, but its breathtaking design and development evoke a sense of awe and admiration that leaves you saying “Mashallah!”
