The Bahraini Farmer’s Market in Budaiya has been in my list of must-visit places in Bahrain for over a year now.
Do not be confused. This is not the year-round Farmer’s Market that is located at Salmabad. This is a seasonal market that is open to the public only from December to April.
Location and Directions– Budaiya Farmers Market is located in Budaiya Botanical Gardens and lies at the intersection of Budaiya highway and Janabiya highway
Parking– Parking maybe a problem but you’ll find a few sandy spots just outside the market location.
Best time to visit– 7 am to 1 pm (if you don’t like crowds its best to get there as early as possible)
Visiting fee- None
Toilet facility– Available
To say that Bahrain has lush green farms may sound like a joke, but believe it or not Bahrain has 10 or more farms where products like dates, figs, mangos, pomegranates, melons, papayas, water turnips, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, tomatoes, beets, eggplants, poultry and dairy items are produced every year.
The Bahraini Farmers Market in Budaiya is organised by the Agriculture and Marine Resources directorate and is an initiative to support local farmers and encourage agricultural development in the Kingdom.
What can you expect from the Bahraini Farmers Market in Budaiya
The market is located inside a public park and as soon as you enter you are welcomed with the image of people flocking through the tracks and across the lawns relaxing, talking and enjoying the winter sun.
Kids play area
The kids play area is the first section you spot. There are many activities like trampolines, a jumping castle, a stage show, colouring and face painting stalls for kids to engage in.
Product stalls
There are two long stretches of stalls as you walk along the park’s tracks. Most of them sell fresh vegetables but there are also stalls that sell honey, plants, chocolates, Bahraini spices, handmade baskets, handmade wooden artefacts, handmade pots, paintings and more.
All the vegetable stalls had a beautiful array of fresh produce at extremely reasonable prices (Broccoli for 300 fils, a big bunch of kale for 500 fils, 5 coloured peppers for 500 fils) and by the time we got there, we found that they were quickly finishing as well. We didn’t find any fruit stall though.
We found many people carrying their own bags and carts filled with their fresh purchases and thought this was a wonderful idea to avoid using plastic.
Food area
There is a separate section for food stalls and we were impressed at the variety of food they were serving. Local as well as retail brands like Lulu were offering different varieties of cuisines at great prices.
A lot of tables and chairs were spread across the area for families to sit together and eat while enjoying the sun. Kids were playing around. We even saw a few people playing badminton!
We ordered a Cappuccino ( 1 BD for a mid size cup), 2 Oreo milkshakes for the kids (1.5 BD each) and some Bahraini breakfast delicacies- all at wonderful prices!
Although a little far from our abode, the Bahraini Farmer’s Market in Budaiya gave us a beautiful experience. The buzzing market with its fresh produce, pleasant conversations with Bahraini vendors, sitting together in a lawn, filled with Bahraini families and expats from across the world made us feel almost at home…like we were all one big family.
We will continue to visit this place till it ends this year. If you visit this place too, let us know how your experience was!
