This is the third part of the series “How my husband reversed his Diabetes Type 2.” Do check out Part I and Part II to read the story in its entirety. Here I will share some tips for reversing Diabetes type 2 (food habits, proportion etc) based on my experience.
WEIGHT LOSS
Weight Loss is the key to reversing diabetes type 2 and fasting helps in weight loss. Fasting is an age-old therapy practised by Jesus Christ and other spiritualists.
It will not harm your health. It improves brain function, promotes longevity and speeds up metabolism.
PROPORTION MATTERS
A diabetic should have less carbohydrates, plenty of non starchy vegetables, a moderate amount of selected fruits and a moderate amount of proteins and fats.
He should stay hydrated because water helps the kidneys to flush out excess blood sugar. More proteins in the diet can help you feel satiated but excess can lead to kidney problems.
Vegetables and fruits provide the necessary fiber for your diet. Fats of plant origin – from avocado and nuts like almonds,walnuts and peanuts help in sugar control if taken in moderation.Seeds like pumpkin seeds and flax seeds also help.
NATURAL FOOD IS ALWAYS THE BEST
Avoid processed food, packaged food, chips, pastries, cakes, white bread, white rice, white flour ( maida ), pasta, sweetened breakfast cereals, fast foods,restaurant food, candy, fruit juices, dried fruit, potatoes, desserts.
Stick to eating food in its natural form. Raw food is healthy ( if edible ). Otherwise steamed, baked and dry roasted food is healthier than fried food.
WHAT’S GOOD, WHAT’S NOT
Apples, pears, peaches, berries, citrus fruits can be eaten. Grapes, mango, banana- intake should be restricted. Similarly green leafy vegetables, cauliflower, broccoli, beans,bitter gourd, tomatoes, peppers, okra, are helpful.
Potatoes are not advised, but sweet potatoes have a lower glycemic index and have fiber. Peas, carrots, beets should be taken in moderation. Lentils are good.
Fatty fish like salmon & mackerel are good. Ghee and butter and meats should be taken in moderation.
A pinch of cinnamon on bread or added to tea/ coffee helps stabilize blood sugar. Barley grains added to soup increases its fiber content.
LET YOUR BODY RUN ITS ROUTINE
Good sleep, adequate amounts of vitamin D and a stress free life also play an important role in reversing diabetes
