Remember the time you visited that beautiful green place amidst the mountain valleys? Remember how you were well served with the vast array of colours and harmony of sounds around you? That’s how nature connects! Read on to find out the 7 beautiful lessons from nature that can truly transform your life!
To me nature is the sum total of our natural environment. It includes both living things and material things, not man made things. Human beings, the sun, the moon, the stars, the trees, the animals, mountains, rivers, seas and meadows are all part of nature.
When I think of trees I cannot but remember how generous they are. A number of things from oxygen and medicine to furniture and gum are the gifts of trees. As a teacher I have been teaching this to my students for years. In fact most natural things are a gift to man. Yet it is a sad truth that these useful natural things are vanishing bit by bit because of man’s greed and interference. Nature is not only a star giver it is also a wonderful teacher.
Nature or God wants you to be happy
Every meadow that is abundant in colour and variety, every drop of morning dew, every twinkling star, every sparkle of the stream, every golden ray of warm sunlight, every chirping bird makes my heart lighter. They seem to commune with me and whisper to me that there is a creator who cares. The impact of nature is positive and gives a sense of peace.
The lesson from nature over here is that both children and adults should connect with nature to cope with the pressures of life. Nature in all its richness is a healer. It compels us to believe that we are not alone and there is Some One up there who wants us to be happy.
I once read the story of a twelve year old girl. She was always fretting and complaining and generally making a nuisance of herself at home. One day, unable to stand her obnoxious behavior her father drove her to a canyon area and left her there. He allowed her to take a blanket, a book and an apple and told her to stay there all alone till she realized her mistakes.
He said he would come back for her in the evening. The girl was frustrated and defiant. She was furious that she had been dumped. She threw the book, the blanket and the apple down the ledge. When she had nothing to do she tried to retrieve the things. As she climbed back she noticed a tree. It was lovely and as she looked through its spreading branches at the sky her attitude began to change.
She began to feel that nature was her mother holding her, giving her comfort and healing. She felt she was part of everything around. And she found herself thinking of God. She just lay there still and peace came upon her and within her. By the time her father returned she was restored. After that day she took time off occasionally to spend some time in healing solitude in the lap of nature. She began to love the Creator to whom nature had led her.
You are unique and your growth has its own pace
There is a saying that “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” Is it true? Perhaps it is true because today we human beings do not keep this rule and are not genuinely happy. We rush and work as maniacs and fall prey to many diseases and ailments. In our greed for more domination, luxury and riches we overwork and end up tired, sick and disillusioned.
The birds, the animals, and even the sun, moon and stars follow a set pattern. The singing of the birds and the sight of the sun bursting into view can only inspire and energize early risers. The great Botanist Linnaeus once said that if he had a conservatory of flowers he could tell the time of the day by the flowers that were open and those that were closed. Each seed grows into a seedling and then into a tree in its own time. The squirrels move at their own pace and so do birds. Barn hens take 21 days to hatch their eggs while parrots take 42 days. Nothing is rushed. Nature does not hurry. Consider what a catastrophe it would be for the world if the sun did not follow God’s timings? Our mental and physical health is at risk if we rush and overwork.
God-made is perfect. Man-made needs repair.
The sun is the most magnificent star in the sky. Psalm 19 of the Bible says that the sun appears like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber and rejoices like a strongman to run its race. Its rising is from one end of heaven and its circuit to the other end. There is nothing hidden from its heat. The importance of the sun for the earth makes us realize how important God is for us. The sun has a touch of God in its character. It sustains life on earth, is dependable, impartial, generous, strong and majestic. It has existed for ages without need for repair because it is God’s creation. Neither do the stars or moon need repair.
The sun, the air, the shade of trees, the rain and the waters are available to both the rich and poor. No partiality in nature.
Human beings make sky scrapers, aeroplanes, cars, mobiles etc. They all need constant repair. No human being can make a leaf, an insect or any living thing. He cannot make the sun set or rise or even hold a wave upon the sand. Yet he brags, pollutes and exploits all creation. He needs to humble himself. Nature makes us realize we are nothing before the creator.
Your hardships will turn into blessings
We hear about volcanoes, blizzards, cyclones, famines and earthquakes in different parts of the world. Human beings, plants and animals die and decay. We learn that bad things are inevitable. Yet we need to suffer to become a blessing to others. Just as a tree exposed to harsh rain and storms strikes deeper roots and develops strong fiber, humans exposed to suffering and hardships become stronger and better equipped for victorious living.
You were created to connect
Sunflowers turn their faces towards the sun. They change their position according to the position of the sun. What do they do on cloudy days? Well, they do not wither or droop. They turn towards each other. Interesting isn’t it? When we have gloomy days why don’t we turn towards each other for support and energy? Nature has so much to teach us. Even the bees give us lessons in cooperation, mutualism and hard work.
A kind act can make a powerful change
One holiday we travelled from Delhi to Mumbai by train. I sat near the window and looked out. The intense heat of summer had parched the land and the rivers. The grass was brown and the trees dull. On our return journey I was delighted to see only greenery and lushness everywhere. A change of season and a few showers had done the magic. Once again nature had turned teacher – teaching me the great transformation God or even happiness and kindness can bring about in an unfruitful life.
God’s love must always shine through
Every orange has an even number of segments, every stalk of wheat has an even number of grains, every bunch of bananas has in its lowest row an even number of bananas, every aquatic animal is equipped for swimming and every land animal is adapted to live on land, waves of the sea roll in on the shore 26 to the minute in all kinds of weather. Amazing!
There is so much precision and accuracy in everything natural. We too feel encouraged to be accurate and precise in every task we undertake. We have been given eyes to see, ears to listen, hands to touch, a nose to smell and a heart to feel the hand of a master craftsman. Nature teaches us to comprehend God’s love through all these things He has lovingly made for us. God’s generosity shines through everything He created.
Make it a habit to get connected with nature and see how she reveals to you God’s presence, beauty, power, wisdom and creativity.
