Aboard the Logos Hope ship in Bahrain

An interesting visit to the world’s largest floating bookstore aboard the Logos Hope ship in Bahrain!

Imagine stepping onto a ship that carries not only books but also the power to bring knowledge, hope, and cultural exchange to people around the world. Logos Hope, a floating bookstore and humanitarian vessel, offers just that- a one of a kind experience for book lovers and adventure seekers.

Things to know before you get there

  • Location– Khalifa Bin Salman Port ( although the ship is docked at the port, vehicles are advised to park near the first check point located in the ground of Ministry of Interior Custom Affairs. Visitors are then taken in buses to the port.)
  • Visit time– The ship is docked till the 18th of June between 4 pm and 11 pm (the last bus leaves the checkpoint at 9.40 pm)
  • Visiting fee– 550 fils for Adults. Free for children. Ticket is taken at the port.
  • Book prices– Reasonable but can be paid only with cash or credit card.
  • Restrooms-Yes there are a few inside the ship.
  • Eating joints– There are some food trucks at the checkpoint and an International Cafe inside the ship. Water is provided at the ticket section of the port although carrying a bottle or two would be helpful during the waiting time.

We thought we were being clever by spontaneously visiting the place yesterday, as it was a weekday and schools had not yet closed for the summer break. However, upon arriving, we were taken aback to find around 200 people waiting in multiple queues for the bus that would transport them.

Dedicated ‘Logos Hope’ volunteers were present, supervising the queues and providing assistance. Some volunteers even distributed free balloons to the little ones, adding a touch of joy to the atmosphere.

Despite the crowd and the sweltering heat, people displayed remarkable patience as they awaited their turn to board the bus. It took nearly two hours before we finally had the opportunity to step onto the bus and make our way to the port.

A little about Logos Hope

Logos Hope has a fascinating past that goes back many years. Originally a passenger car ferry called Gustav Vasa, it underwent a remarkable transformation in 2004 to become the floating bookstore it is today. Renamed Logos Hope, it joined the organization Operation Mobilization (OM) and set out on a mission to deliver books and aid to diverse communities around the globe.

OM by the way is an international Christian organization that focuses on evangelism, discipleship, and mercy ministries. Logos Hope is one of OM’s initiatives, along with other ships like Doulos and Logos II, which have previously served in similar capacities.

Orientation

After obtaining our tickets, we stepped onto the majestic ship and gathered in a designated area for an orientation. Here, we were introduced to the ship’s purpose and given a brief overview of the different sections we would soon explore. This insightful session heightened our anticipation and set the stage for an incredible experience onboard.

Bookstore

The orientation area led us straight into the onboard bookstore, a haven for book lovers. It was a treasure trove filled with books for all interests, ages, and languages.

While the collection of approximately 5000 titles was vast, we felt it could have offered a bit more variety. However, the affordable prices of the books made it tempting to make a few purchases.

I also couldn’t resist the charming souvenirs available, which became delightful keepsakes of this memorable visit.

Journey of Life section

Leaving the book section, we entered a beautiful corridor called the Journey of Life. It featured an interactive display depicting the story of the prodigal son from the Bible. We wondered if the ship’s volunteers and crew members had similar life-changing experiences before joining Logos Hope.

International Cafe

Next, we ventured into the International Cafe section of the ship, a bustling hub where small refreshments were available for purchase. This vibrant space provided an opportunity to engage with the friendly crew members and volunteers. However, due to the late hour, we reluctantly had to shorten our visit and bid farewell to the ship.

Cultural Events

Back home, I came across more information about this remarkable ship. It was mentioned that Logos Hope’s vibrant cultural events, such as concerts, art exhibitions, and interactive displays, create enriching experiences and foster cross-cultural dialogue wherever they journey. In Bahrain, they had organized a Cultural Fair and an empowering ladies-only event centered around self-worth.

During our visit we also discovered that Logos Hope’s volunteer crew hails from approximately 60 different nations. These young individuals have willingly committed two years of their lives to live, work, and serve together on board and in the communities they encounter during their port visits.

All in all our experience at the Logos Hope ship was amazing barring the waiting time we had at the bus point. Hoping the authorities would manage this better in the rest of the days it is here, with more bus services and maybe a pre-booking service?
