8 weeks into the BHH challenge

challenge update

Even though the BHH challenge does not come with any pressure, I must admit that it is difficult to keep up with a new routine, especially when things go out of your control.

The Being Habitually Healthy challenge is focused more on creating a habit of adopting healthy practices, which until the last few days, I was earnestly trying to follow.

I know and I speak for myself, that if I were to list the factors (from the challenge), that had truly become habitual, I would say they were:

  • The 16/8 fasting routine
  • Drinking water
  • Praying

How can I vouch they were habits?

  • I was doing these activities every single day without thinking
  • It no longer felt like it was a great accomplishment since it naturally became a part of me!
  • There was no question of giving up!

Having lost around 3 kgs of weight and 2 inches from the waistline along with the other benefits like more energy, better sleep, I felt really confident of continuing (and improving) this routine, till something happened.

With the change of climate, I fell sick. My family caught the virus and it was an absolute mayhem of the routine, all over again. To regain my health, I had to ignore the fasting, the exercise and the diet for the next 10 days or so.

It was truly demotivating. I had to force myself to create a habit of eating breakfast, so I could break the newly established fasting habit. When I finally stopped the fasting habit, it broke my habit of drinking water as well, since they were both associated with each other.

Slowly every habit broke loose, one after the other, over the last week. Feeling defeated with the whole purpose, I even went to the extent of eating unhealthy food at unhealthy schedules- just like my old self.

SO WHAT NOW?

Well, today I’m deciding to get back! Yes, with the support of my husband, and friends I am going to do this all over again. 🙂

James Clear, again, came to my rescue of course!

I love this man’s blog and his book Atomic Habits! In the book, he talks about the science behind building habits and offers really simple solutions to forming good ones and breaking the bad ones.

Anyway this book really spoke to me this time.

He says “You can break a habit, but you’re unlikely to forget it”

Of course he was referring to bad habits when he wrote this, but this helps me to realize that with a little effort I can get back to my earlier routine!

Again he says “The problem is not slipping up; the problem is thinking that if you can’t do something perfectly, then you shouldn’t do it at all.”

I guess this was exactly the reason why I felt so demotivated all this while. I wanted it to be a perfect and smooth challenge!

So today I’m picking up from where I left.

Even though the BHH challenge ends in less than a month, I will continue to follow my routine with more care and hope to become the person I always thought I was.

Happy and healthy! 🙂
