This healthy and diabetes-friendly broccoli cheese balls recipe is the go-to plan for your food cravings. They are easy, quick, nutritious and even keto-friendly. They also make wonderful appetizers for any party.
Ever since I have understood the variety of benefits that broccoli brings to the human body, I have taken it as a challenge to include it as part of our meals, in whatsoever way possible.
This particular recipe is one such effort and is inspired by simplyrecipes.com in the sense that I have made it more Indian in its essence.
These broccoli cheese balls are not just yummy but healthy and diabetes-friendly too. This is because they are high on protein, extremely low on carbohydrates and rich in fibre with ingredients like broccoli, chickpea flour (besan or gram flour), egg and flax seeds.
I have made this thrice now in the last 2 months and it is slowly becoming a favourite snack. I was doubtful if my 3-year-old would like these because of its texture but to my relief and total delight- he loved them and usually has about 3, from a batch of 15 that this recipe produces.
So let’s get to the recipe now, shall we? I hope I have excited you enough 😉

Healthy and diabetes-friendly broccoli cheese balls recipe
Healthy and diabetes friendly broccoli cheese balls
Ingredients
- 2 cups broccoli florets
- 1 egg
- 3 tbsp chickpea flour or gram flour or besan flour (or as much as you can hold the balls together)
- 1/4 cup onions finely chopped
- 1/4 cup cheddar cheese grated
- 1/2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 2 tsps coriander leaves finely chopped
- 2 tsp flax-seed powder
- 1 tbsp black pepper powder
- Salt as required
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 180 degrees C (350 degrees F). Brush a little sunflower oil (any tasteless oil) on the baking utensil. If you have a baking tray, you can also line it with parchment pper or foil.
- Wash and steam the broccoli florets in boiling water until tender.
- Once the florets cool down, finely chop them and keepaside.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the chopped broccoli, egg, chickpea flour, cheese, coriander leaves, flax seed powder, ginger-garlic paste, black pepper powder and salt. Mix well. It should not be too watery nor dry.
- Scoop about 2 tbsps of the mixture and make a ball using your hands. If you find it watery just add more chickpea flour.
- Place the balls on the baking vessel or sheet and lightly brush all the balls with oil.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until slightly toasted.
- Serve it with your favourite dipping sauce. We had it with chilli sauce.
Notes
- To steam broccoli, just place it in a colander placed inside a vessel of water on the stove for about 5-8 minutes.
- If you don’t want egg just replace it with 2 tbsps cheese but this would not be advisable for diabetics
- You can add any melting cheese in this recipe. Cheddar is my favourite.
- You can also steam and pan fry these broccoli cheese balls instead of baking them by adding a little oil in a pan
- To make it tastier, roll these balls into breadcrumbs and deep fry. This would not be a healthy option though and definitely not advisable for diabetics.
- I think you can replicate this recipe with cauliflower too though I haven’t tried it out myself! Let me know if you do.
