In the beginning, all challenges need sheer willpower to carry them through, but once given enough time and effort, they progress towards becoming a habit. An accountability group thus helps like-minded individuals to pass through that first difficult phase of forming or breaking a habit, with the support of each other.
*BHH- Being Habitually Healthy
More often than not, you are better equipped at performing a task, when you have a person or a group to do it with.
Shopping on a holiday alone can seem quite daunting, whereas with friends, it’s an adventure. Preparing your home alone, for a festival, is great, but what can beat the pleasure you experience, when the whole family joins you!
Similarly creating habits around health are also more rewarding, when you have a group of people to work on them with.
They stand by you in your failures, they push you to do better, they challenge your thoughts and they work along with you to reach your goals. They are your accountability partners and guess what- I am blessed to have a team of three for this challenge.
Read more about this challenge in my post Why I am pledging to be habitually healthy.
How does having an accountability group for a challenge help?
- It allows you to be open about your feelings and thoughts,
- Helps you overcome mental obstacles
- It helps bring about a healthy competition
- Makes the long process seem easier and more fun
- Motivates you to stay on track and assess progress
- Makes you more committed to the task in question
- Deepens your understanding of the context (in this case health)
- Brings about an awareness of your own strengths and effective strategies used by others in the group.
So who are these people, who as part of the accountability group are collaborating with me in the being habitually healthy (BHH) challenge?
PRIYANKA
Hi! I’m Priyanka, a development professional, working full time from home and a newly married bride.
I enjoy my work immensely and so sometimes I fail to maintain a good work-life balance. I do make sure that I extract some me-time from my busy routine, which I absolutely enjoy. Yet my physical health is an area that I tend to ignore.
I have always been chubby in my life and honestly very content about it too, which at times creates an obstacle towards loosing the extra weight.
Don’t get me wrong- I am very happy with the way I am, yet I do understand that it is important to be fit, feel healthy and run a km at one go, which I am not able to currently do.
Hence I am accepting this challenge to work towards my overall health and create a healthy lifestyle.
PREETHI
My name is Preethi Issac. I’m a big foodie and I enjoy cooking and reading. I’m also very serious about my fitness. I have been following the intermittent fasting schedule for more than 2 months now and I am happy with the results.
My priorities in this challenge, therefore are directed, more towards the other aspects. For example, I lack consistency in being able to regularly drink the recommended 8 glasses of water. I am also poor in creating a healthy routine for my mental health.
So yes, with the help of this challenge, I would like to lose a few more pounds and also learn to lead a more healthy lifestyle.
SWEETY
My name is Sweety Thomas. I work with a corporate foundation. I am a mother to an amazing five year old. Books are my passion and I am a kick-ass cook!
In the last few years I have become the poster girl for an over-worked mom. There are now physical manifestations of the stress in terms of health issues, putting on weight, which I want to address.
My biggest challenge, though it seems would be time, but is essentially focus and will. A certain amount of self-discipline needs to be inculcated because I really want to be the best me that I can possibly be.
Creating healthy habits is not an easy task. Breaking unhealthy ones is even more difficult. This challenge includes both and so it will take time, hard work, perseverance and commitment to actually make this happen, in three months.
Moreover, when it is a question of your lifestyle, results rarely come as quickly as you hope. So it can get quite demotivating!
As an accountability group, we, therefore, look forward to helping each other through our difficult phases and also remind each other, of the person, we as individuals would like to eventually become- a habitually healthy person!
