Just how many times do we look at poor strangers as opportunities to share some joy? This lovely poem by a 16-year-old, about Sarah, will definitely warm your hearts today!!
by Anika John
A knock so feeble sounded upon the door
Who was that wandering out in the pouring rain
It was an old woman leaning hard upon a cane
Pale she looked and torn were the clothes she wore
In a feeble voice she asked for food
Her appearance and her manner had already touched my heart
Plain bread she ate with obvious delight
As she ate, joy had spread over her sun tanned mane
I had always refused to touch things plain
Now this poor soul led me from darkness to light
Hereafter I must be satisfied with the least
What if I were poor and had to wander about!
As I watched her eat I felt cheerful and happy
Helping others I realized, fills one with joy
A joy that prompts you to make many others happy
be kind to people unhappy
I gave the old woman things delicious
And sat down to watch her satisfied expression
I questioned the poor dear about her life
She had no living relatives, she knew no friend
Her life had been a nightmare of wanderings and strife
She hadn’t ever had enough to spend
Though uneducated she was honest I observed
I was touched and decided to reward this honesty
I asked her to stay and keep my house
I would in return with her my pleasures share
She assented and reddened like a rose
At last she had shelter and someone to care
God had presented me with what I could not afford
A friend and a housekeeper, both in dear old Sarah!
